The nominees for the 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards include ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ with four nominations each, and five for HBO’s ‘Succession’.

2023 saw SAG-AFTRA members take part in the longest ever industry strike, with demands of pay equality and protection from advancing AI technology. For 118 days, the film and television industry was held at a stand still whilst negotiations between union officials and leading studios took place. On November 9th 2023, the strikes came to an end with an initial agreement reached, and the industry slowly woke up from its slumber as the cogs started turning again.

Almost two months later, the nominations have been announced for the 30th annual SAG Awards, and the Screen Actors Guild are preparing for a night of celebration. The red carpet will be rolled out and champagne glasses will be raised, to commemorate the success of film and television from the last 12 months, but also celebrating the huge achievements of the union this past year.

Streaming on Netflix, the 30th annual awards will take place on Saturday 24 February and is likely to be attended by some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. The influence of the SAG Awards is enormous on the film industry, with their leading award of the night, ‘Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture’, having a track record of predicting the ‘Best Motion Picture’ award at the Oscars. Other categories include the much deserved ‘Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble’ for both film and television, a corner of the entertainment industry that is often overlooked during awards season.

Leading the pack with five nominations is the record breaking HBO drama series Succession, with the finale being broadcast back in May 2023. On the big screen, the infamous Barbenheimer leads the pack, with four nominations each for the summer blockbusters Barbie and Oppenheimer
