The nominees of the BAFTA Film Awards 2024 are revealed, with ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Poor Things’ leading with 13 and 11 nominations each.

On Sunday 18 February, the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall will play host to the biggest night in the British film calendar, welcoming both British and international stars as they gather for the 77th Annual British Academy Film Awards.

After what was a massive year for the film industry, the BAFTA awards will celebrate cinematic achievements from all over the world. Now in its 77th year, the illustrious awards have become one of the highlights of the awards season.

Despite the SAG-AFTRA Actors’ Strike, and the effect it had on performers and productions in the industry, we were still graced with some incredible achievements in cinema. Leading this year’s BAFTA nominations is Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer with 13 nominations, followed by Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things with 11.

Among the nominees are a number of Spotlight members, including Rising Star contenders Phoebe Dynevor, Mia McKenna-Bruce and Sophie Wilde. Other nominated Spotlight members include Emily Blunt, Claire Foy and Rosamund Pike for the Supporting Actress category, Barry Keoghan and Cillian Murphy for Leading Actor, Carey Mulligan and Vivian Oparah for Leading Actress, and casting directors Kahleen Crawford, Susan Shopmaker, Isabella Odoffin, Ellen Lewis and Rene Haynes for Casting.

This year’s ceremony will be hosted by national treasure and Spotlight member, David Tennant. When asked how he felt about being approached for the gig of the year, he said, “I am delighted to have been asked to host the EE BAFTA Film Awards and help celebrate the very best of this year’s films and the many brilliant people who bring them to life.”

The BAFTA awards have one category that make them unique to all other film awards. The EE Rising Star Award allows up and coming performers the chance to be celebrated for their body of work in the last year. Previous winners have included Tom Holland (SpiderMan: Homecoming), Spotlight members Lashana Lynch (No Time To Die) and Will Poulter (The Revenant), and last years winner, Emma Mackey (Emily).

This year’s nominees for the EE Rising Star Award are:

  • Phoebe Dynevor (Fair Play, The Bank of Dave)
When asked about her nomination, Phoebe said, “I am truly grateful for this recognition and excited to continue challenging myself with new roles and projects. Thank you to BAFTA and EE for listing me alongside this year’s wonderful nominees.”
  • Ayo Adebiri (Theatre Camp, The Bear, Bottoms, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse)
Ayo’s reaction to the nomination: It’s wonderful and humbling to receive this nomination. It’s the greatest privilege to tell stories and make people laugh. I know I’m in esteemed company and this means the world.”
  • Jacob Elordi (Priscilla, Saltburn, Euphoria)
Jacob said, “I am deeply honoured to be recognised by BAFTA and EE with a Rising Star nomination.”
  • Mia McKenna-Bruce ( Kindling, How to have Sex)
When asked how she felt about being nominated, Mia said, “To hear that I now stand amongst the past and present nominees is surreal and a total dream come true. I am so very grateful, thank you to the jury.”
  • Sophie Wilde (Talk To Me, Everything Now, Tom Jones)
Sophie’s response when asked about the nomination were, “I am so very excited and grateful to BAFTA and EE for including me in this category and amongst this year’s brilliant nominees. To be recognised, and for Talk To Me, a film we all put so much love and hard work into, is a privilege.”
